The Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant Center

There is something different about being on a floor where every patient has some variant of the same disease. You tend not to see things in terms of gender, race, wealth, religion or politics. You are either receiving chemotherapy or recovering.. You are waiting for a transplant or recovering. Everyone on the floor has the same goal: remission.

Quiet hours are 2-4 p.m., so I was surprised to hear clapping and cheering coming from the hallway. When I looked out, all the nurses were lined up cheering a transplant patient leaving the Center for home. They bring in a birthday cake after a transplant to celebrate the day the patient received a new chance at life. It is, both, heartwarming and hopeful to every patient in the Center, and we all hope the day comes when the celebration is ours.
